Nepal’s Health Sector Reforms Applauded by Nepali Diaspora in the U.S.

Kathmandu— The Nepali community in the United States has expressed appreciation for the initiatives taken by Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population in improving health services.

During an event organized in New York by the Nepali Janasamparka Samiti America and the GP Koirala Foundation, speakers commended Health Minister Pradip Paudel for the positive direction of the ongoing reforms, expressing hope and optimism about the future. They stated that Minister Paudel’s efforts have already started to yield visible and tangible impacts among the general public and pledged solidarity from the diaspora community.

Anand Bista, president of the Nepali Janasamparka Samiti America, remarked that encouraging steps are underway and voiced expectations for further targeted reforms aimed at underprivileged citizens. Similarly, Dr. Keshav Paudel, a senior physician and former president of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) America, noted that with strong intentions and effective implementation, reforms in areas such as health insurance and hospital services could bring substantial improvements.

Minister Paudel, in his remarks, emphasized that the Nepalese in the U.S. should serve as role models in contributing to their homeland. He expressed hope for strong support from the diaspora, particularly the U.S.-based Nepali community, in advancing Nepal’s health reforms.

The Minister is currently in New York to attend the 58th Session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development. He also took part in an interaction organized by Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the UN, aimed at gathering suggestions ahead of Nepal’s upcoming national budget.

He also held a meeting with the State Minister for Health of the Maldives, stating that necessary preparations are underway to facilitate postgraduate (PG) studies for Maldivian students in Nepal and expressing confidence that a formal agreement will be finalized soon.

In his address to the commission, Minister Paudel highlighted Nepal’s significant progress in maternal and child health, including a notable decline in mortality rates over the past three decades. He called for enhanced international collaboration to sustain and accelerate this progress.
